Blessed Sacrament Music, Drama, & Choirs

Welcome to the world of the BS YOUTH CANTORS!!!
IMPORTANT:  Please make sure the following dates are on your calendars**:
**These dates were listed on the Rules Letter you and your parents read and signed at the beginning of the school year and have been on this site since late May.
Saturday, December 2 – see information below – all Cantors must attend
Thursday, December 14 – see information below – all Cantors must attend

For those of you who have not had a teen participate as a BS Youth Cantor (8th Grade) before, here is some information about our wonderful BS YOUTH CANTORS!

  • The BS Youth Cantors are the elite vocal leaders of the school.  Teens are auditioned both in 7th Grade and then again at the beginning of 8th Grade in order to create the well-trained sound that originally gained the group invitations to sing at St. Malachy’s in NYC each year.   The BS Youth Cantors have been a special part of Blessed Sacrament School since 2000, and we have sent vocalists to participate in the elite vocal groups of Visitation, Gonzaga, St. John’s College High School, Holy Cross, Georgetown Prep, DeMatha and BCC to name a few!  The Choral Directors of those schools have come to know that teens who were part of the BS Cantor group are special!
  • Teens who auditioned and participated in the weekly lunchtime Cantors-in-Training rehearsal during the 7th grade school year are eligible to participate as a BS Youth Cantor.  They learn what a Cantor does, how to be a Cantor, and memorize the songs necessary to fulfill this position.  If a teen did not participate in 7th Grade, they are not eligible.
  • Teens will be re-auditioned in September (we all know that voices change at this age) by Mrs. Forcey to ascertain voice blending and possible vocal training assistance.  Voices were placed in Sections (Soprano, Alto & Tenor) at the end of the last school year.  Each Section was divided into groups with a “robe” leader.  The list is printed below for easy reference and memory.  Just as a “travel team” looks to blend together the best athletes, the BS YOUTH CANTORS are striving to be the best we can be!
  • Teens will be sent an email over the summer with songs they already know, but might need to review prior to the first week of school to prepare for our first School Liturgy.  They have been told that they are personally responsible for preparation.  If a teen consistently comes unprepared to our rehearsals, or does not behave as a leader should during rehearsals or performing, they will be “excused” from the Cantors.
  • Teens will meet with Mrs. Forcey at lunchtime each Tuesday and at 7:45am the morning of all school liturgies to continue to review material for liturgies, concerts and performances.  These rehearsals are important.  Mrs. Forcey will send an email reminder a few days prior to each school liturgy to help all teens to remember they need to be there.  And she will ask Cantors to bring their Assignment Books to Cantors each week to be able to write down any important information.  ROLL WILL BE TAKEN.  If you miss more than three rehearsals, you will be “excused” from Cantors.
  • A full-year calendar of dates will be posted here to help everyone have all the information they need.  This will help prevent the “I didn’t know” difficulty. This is an important year for your teen, with lots going on.  I well remember (three times, three teens!) trying to keep track of so many important due dates, Confirmation requirements, high school applications, tests and the excitement of acceptances.  It’s easy to forget the date of a concert, performance or liturgy.  I hope having it all on my website will help.
  • PLEASE NOTE: The following performances are the equivalent of a Championship Game, requiring the MANDATORY participation of all Cantors: SATURDAY,Dec. 2; THURSDAY, December 14  2pm & 7pm concerts; THURSDAY, May 16, 2016  2pm & 7pm concerts.  These are mandatory.  If a teen is not present for these dates/times, participation as a Cantor will be reconsidered, and the teen “excused.”  PLEASE make note of these dates on your calendars.
  • BS Youth Cantors earn the privilege of participating in the annual Hershey Park Celebration.
  • Cantors who consistently come prepared for rehearsals, concerts, and school liturgies earn the privilege to participate in our St. Malachy’s NYC outreach trip.
  • What causes a Cantor to be “excused?”  It takes an awful lot to cause Mrs. Forcey to “excuse” a teen from the Cantors.  Because the time we have at lunchtime is very limited, and we have a very short time before each school liturgy to rehearse, disruptive behavior cannot be a part of our team.  No team can be successful without everyone working together on the same goal – in this case, singing as a team.  ROLL WILL BE TAKEN.  If you miss more than three morning rehearsals, you will be “excused” from Cantors.  Roll will be taken for Lunchtime meetings as well.  Same rules apply.  **Please note: there is NO LUNCH DETENTION on Tuesdays for 8th grade Cantors.  If your teen earns a lunch detention for that day it is served on Wednesday.
  • St. Malachy’s NYC trip costs were $450.00 this PAST year, and are anticipated to be the same in 2018.  Forms will be handed out in December and must be handed in on time.  If you miss the deadline, you miss the trip.
  • Some dates already known:
    • Friday, June 9 was our FIRST MASS!!!!  The Cantors were SUPERB!
    • Tuesday, August 29 – 12:30pm-2pm luncheon CantorSing! – Mrs. Forcey will provide pizza/soda/water for everyone before we prepare for our first mass of the school year(MANDATORY)
    • Friday, September 1 – School Liturgy – Cantors arrive in the Music Room at 7:45am to prepare (roll will taken)(PLEASE SEE *MASTER CALENDAR ON HOME PAGE* FOR ALL LITURGY DATES)
    • Saturday, December 2 – Franciscan Monastery – Annual Cantors & Children’s Choir followed by Annual Christmas Party at Mrs. Forcey’s!! – (MANDATORY1400 Quincy St., NE, Washington, DC  20017, 202-526-6800, followed by our ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY at Mrs. Forcey’s home! 1455 Harvard St., NW, Washington, DC  20009  (party is over in time so that teens who have plans to go to the Visitation Cotillion can get there on time!**Mrs. Forcey has easy directions from her home to Visi!)

    • Please place these dates on your calendars now

    • THURSDAY, December 14 – 2pm and 7pm Winter Concerts(MANDATORY) (arrival for evening concert is 6:30pm and teens are required to stay until the end of the concert, and stay to neatly hang up their robes with their robe leader – our C.A.R.E. theme clearly underscores that Courtesy and Respect are important virtues we teach all our students.)

    • THURSDAY, May 17, 2018 – 2pm and 7pm Spring Concerts(MANDATORY) (arrival for evening concert is 6:30pm and teens are required to stay until the end of the concert – our C.A.R.E. theme clearly underscores that Courtesy and Respect are important virtues we teach all our students.)
    • MARCH 9-11, 2018 – St. Malachy’s NYC outreach trip – cost this year was $450.00, and it is anticipated it will be the same in 2017) (the cost usually includes bus, hotel, skating, Broadway show, Metropolitan Museum of Art entrance, two breakfasts, two dinners – all information communicated in explanation flyer – our last trip cost $450.00).  Cantors will be tested on their knowledge of songs we have learned.  Teens MUST have memorized all lyrics prior to testing and be able to sing all songs required.  See list of songs and lyrics below.  These will be updated prior to DECEMBER – so the teens will have MONTHS to complete memorization.  An email with listening links will be sent to Cantors often so that they have all they need to memorize/prepare.

Hope you read this all!

• Mrs. Forcey’s rules are:
o Each teen is a representative of:
 Themselves, their parents and family, and our school & parish
 Please be respectful to everyone, including the people you meet in NYC

 PLEASE WEAR APPROPRIATE CLOTHES:
• NO tube/cami’s covered by very loose exposed skin tops, skin tight shorts, dresses or skirts – in otherwords, if it is too skimpy, Mrs. Forcey will be carrying a number of oversized, long-sleeved t-shirts and sweatpants that you will be required to wear over your skimpy clothing – no exceptions whatsoever- we are representing our school and your families
Casual for bus trips, Met Museum and Central Park(see above description of what is appropriate)
• Skirts or dresses, comfortable shoes(no BOOTS) for girls for dinner/show/performance, no high heels (we will be walking!)

• Call Mr. Kelly, Call your parents
• Place you under my direct supervision for the remainder of the trip
* cellphones will be confiscated by Mrs. Forcey and returned to teen on Sunday on the bus home (if phone is confiscated, teen will be required to text parents that they can reach their teen by contacting Mrs. Forcey for the remainder of the trip)
